that 90's bounce.

that 90's bounce.

what up clan , i have done a search on this site and still havent found what im looking for. my problem is swing on my fantom. i was looking for that 90's hip like premo, peterock, and all those early 90's beatmakers . i know they used mpc's but i know it could be done on the fantom. people say there is no such swing but i know people and they have both and theycan tell the difference so its not just me. note im not looking for a mpc feel but but a more flowing fantom feel to to make those samples bounce. so anyone have anytips or suggestions im here all day to discuss this, any techniques are welcome..... peace

I believe that you are looking for the "Quantize" function. Quantize can be aplied AT recording or AFTER recording and it lets you to place notes right on the beat (GRID mode)or off-beat (SHUFFLE mode) and also according to pre-defined Templates. Look at this in the manual.

I know what you're saying man, the swing and feel of the MPC that is natural.

I'm not a big fan of MPC's ( and i don't own one ), but i generally experimented with various ways to acheiving the desired sound.

Try varying quantize amount to 65% during recording, and maybe another 65% after that. Or , just keep fiddling with the numbers..make it feel "loose"

yo, im really just trying to see if anybody has a good formula to this . i know everybody will set it different. i just read too many treads on this with no answers. some people say dont use grid q and just use shuffle or template after the fact. i know theres no real answers but lets see howw close we can. come

I have both, I've found the best way to get the feel you want is to practice with the quantize totally off.

Yes there is a difference in the groove between the two, but nothin so magic or dramatic that you can't achieve it with the fantom. Main thing to remember is not just swing but velocity, changing the velocity in your drums helps alot. Especially in your kicks...

if you got a boom-bap ba-boom-boom-bap, that "ba" should be lower in velocity than the "boom" lol, hard to type, but trust, it's more so in how you play it not just the machines, turn off the quantize and play around till you got that feel

you also try 1/16th triplets.....and most of all, experiment

Saint, I was Just going to say that.....There's no such thing as one machine swinging more than others....It's all in how you tap it in...And there is no such thing as a 'natural' swing in any of them... If you tap in a normal swingless beat, and you try to add the shuffle quant while or after the fact, it's not going to swing correctly..or like you hope...You have to know what it is you're lookin for and swing accordingly while you tap so you can land closest to to where the shuffle will pull it. if not, the quantise will pull it to the closest to where you tapped it and if you aint right, neither will the machine. It just rounds it out....

but what jburner wants is a shuffle setting and set it to a 63% and if you're on so will it...This is not what I think, this is what it is...

If you need more of an error margin, double the speed of the tempo so you can have more places to land, and so does the quantise..E.G. if you have a beat at 90, set it to 180 and try there....Experiment as advised....

:) i think everyone wants you to be famous j burner, so you'll fund roland's next fantom. maybe called fantom XXX where you could watch...porno as well. or even make video clips. Maybe a webcam ? just maybe...maybe they could even develop it to watch dvd's or bluray...or, whatever.

I wish you all the best. I believe the "swing" or "bounce" will ultimately be in the heart of every MPC system that cannot be created 100%. Maybe some will not view it this way, but i certainly do.

man....how i wish SRX cards are internet modem as well.

^^

well, their is a sense that each machine has it's own groove, or quirks, but, the sound he wants can be achieved without an mpc, I won't lie, I love the mpc sequencer....but with practice you can get the same results from whatever sequencer you choose, you just have to know what sound you want, and get it.....

You don't need an MPC to swing..If you think that the MPC is the only one to do this you either A) only have an MPC, B) Don't know what you're doing, or C) Don't know what you're talkin about......FantomX can handle it...Here's a humble and short example.....I was barely able to upload it that's why it's so short...but you can get the idea....Got headphones? The 808 sound better through headphones than PC speakers, unless your PC is bangin with subs...

yeah i feel you, some think the mpc is a "magic" machine, but i've heard mad stiff beats from cats with mpcs, and beats with much groove comming from the pc.....

it's all about the groove man, no machine can replace that, I very seldom use the quantize, I just put in my own groove, I don't even really like the "swing" on the mpc, I like the resolution of the sequencer though, it puts it exactly where I hit it....

yo septimo thats what im talkin about . maybe its my timming ,but that bounce was cool. do you quantize or use shuffle and if you dont mind what settings do you like to use. i never wanted this to be a mpc vs fantom thing i only wanted knowlege on the subject.

J burner...

I knew thats what you meant, it's just hard to let you know that I know what you're talking about without showing you...;) It's not about MPC vs Fantom...I like both as I know they both do the same thing when it comes to sequence timing.. To believe that the MPC can only swing like that is just as crazy as believing in the boogie man..It's impossible, there's no way at all that one sequencer can out swing another...NO way at all....

Well I use various settings for different situations....For that track there I used a Shuffle quantise setting at 63% nothing else....the rest is me landing on point...The quantise shouldn't be depended on to land for you cus it'll put you where it thinks it's closest and if your closer to the wrong it's going to be wrong as well. Quantise should only keep you aligned that's all, not make the beat for you...Don't try to tap in a stiffer styled beat and tell the quantise to try and swing it for you..It won't happen...Another thing not all drum sample combinatons sound right when they swing...so make sure your snare sounds good with your kick, and hats for that matter...Good luck to you sir, hope you get it..:) Show me if or when you do....

Try to set, GRID, Resolution 45%, 16th and make some 2Bars Drums
pattern. The Fantom x is a tight 448 ppq sequencer; it's mean that with the right sounds you can get that MPCs, SP12/1200 or ASR10 swing.

And SU-700....

But the shuffle @ 63% will be more what you're looking for, J....less stiff than on grid no matter how low you set it...Use each for what they are...
