I got "а зачем это?" translated to "but what is it for?" allright, but I didn't know what you meant by that. But now that I do: I hope this explains why I am putting myself through this. So yeah, In a way it's just for fun ;-)

Is het herspuiten gelukt? Welke kleur ga je nemen. Ik vind het zwart echt prachtig. Ik liep zelf al langer met een zelfde gedacht rond. Maar het probleem is de belettering. Hoe heb je deze laten maken?

It took me a lot of time to figure out how to go about repainting my Ax-7, but I've got it all worked out now. The customization job will be done in november 2007 with the help of Daan Baars, a good friend of mine who recently bought a high-end cutting plotter. Here's the basic idea:

1) Sanding my Ax-7's casing and spray paint it with a water soluble white. Conventional paint would probably eat away the plastic. We might also use a primer to prevent the paint from destroying the plastic.
2) Spray paint the areas that will contain red graphics, well, red ;-)
3) Plot the lettering and other graphics and apply them to the keytar. The plotted decals will be used as a mask when applying the final paint layer.
4) Spray paint the entire keytar black.
5) Remove the masking decals.
6) Apply a layer of durable transparent coating.
7) Have the result insured for about 5000 euros ;-).

I'll let you know of any progress.

Remember that the painting & lettering is only half of the customization job. The other half (building my Kenton MidiStream transmitter into the AX-7's casing) is already done by antoher friend of mine, Ernst Fliek of ernstamps.com.

The paint job (satin finish black) worked out allright, but the lettering proved to be a b*itch of epic-ish proprotions.

As you might have guessed from this thread, I tried to replace every last bit of text on my AX7 with its Russian translation. We used the finest quality of masking film and cut out the new lettering with an expensive, state of the art laser cutting machine, but the print proved to be too small to transfer to the body of my AX7.

We tried various types of masking film, but either the print was too small or the mask's "negative" damaged the paint when tearing it off.

Plan B (due next week, deadline is our gig on august 23rd ;-) is to completely redesign the layout of the lettering, omitting the problems we ran into during our first attempt.

We'll use a bigger and bolder font (Eurostile Extended Bold, which is pretty close to the font used on the original Polivoks) and leave out text if neccesary.

I'll keep you posted,
