Organ (PRA 92) sounds better in patch mode than performance

29 May 2005, 15:32
Hi,

On my FXR, I created a performance with the grand pipe organ (PRA 92) on channel 1. When I play it this way, it sounds very dull.
Most of the reverb is missing. The sound is cut off early as soon as the key is released.

When I play in patch mode, this doesn't happen.
I need to get the sound to be as good in performance mode. What parameter do I need to change ?

I tried to initialize the performance and just set the patch # to PRA 92, but clearly the defaults for performance are not suitable for my use.
I also enabled the reverb in the performance, and copied the exact settings from the patch mode. To no avail.

When in patch mode, if I disable reverb, then the sound is somewhat dull too, so I'm confident it's reverb related.

Thanks for any help !

This topic has been talked to death already.

You might want to review the FAQs for your answer.
I assume you are referring to http://www.fantomized.info/docs/faq/FantomSX-Newbie-FAQ.html#3.1 .
Unfortunately, the procedure described there does not work on the Fantom XR, which I am using.
At step 5, after pressing effect, I am in an "effect switch" screen. I get the choice between MFX1/MFX2/MFX3/CHO/REV/MST . No routing.

What are the correct instructions for the FXR ?

Try to do all the steps in the editor software. It's a pretty straightforward procedure, you should't have any problems. Working with the tiny screen of XR could be headache, and it has a lot different layout from the X/R screen for which the FAQ article is written. If you still are unable to get it done, I'll walk you through all the steps provided you have Fantom X Editor and your module is correctly connected to computer. Don't get mad at dansgold's helpful suggestions. He's a known issue in this fine forum, he claims he has a "method" in his arrogance.

Whatever.

I had no idea I was a "known issue" except in the fevered imaginations of a few.

It is not arrogance to point out that a particular issue has been talked to death.

It is also quite the case that the principle involved is the same on the FXR as the FX keyboards. The same principle applies to almost every workstation-class keyboard manufactured by Alesis, Emu, Korg, Roland, Yamaha and others over the last decade or so.

If you understand the principle, the procedure becomes childsplay quickly enough, regardless of what particular instrument you are operating at the time.

Pointing THAT out isn't arrogance either.

My reply to the original poster was neither rude or arrogant, only direct and to the point.

I don't feel that providing button-pushing procedures to be carried out by rote contributes much of real value. If all you ever want to know is "Step A, Step B" ... then you will ultimately understand nothing. That's not an insult, it's just an observation ... that such an approach ultimately leads to greater and greater confusion if you ever want to gain any sophistication in operating your equipment.

The problem with "quick-n-dirty" is that dirty hangs around long after quick is forgotten.

performance vs patch mode

Doctor,

I can't use the Fantom editor software, because Roland doesn't make an editor for the operating system I use (OS/2). I need to do it on the XR itself. I feel this should be doable.

dansgold,

I understand the principle of what needs to be done. The devil is in the details here. What's in the FAQ is a step-by-step procedure made for the workstations, but it is not the same on the XR . Unless you are running that model, the procedure is not helpful.

Anyway, I found the right screen on the XR on page 145 of the XR manual in the end.

madbrain,

OS2,. . . . . . . . I used it for years and loved it. A powerful OS for its time. Too bad it was not marketed in the proper manner. It would have truly challenged Windows. What platform are you running it on and why are you still using it? Just curious. . . . . . . . . .

I'm running it on a dual Athlon MP 2800+ box, with Ultra160 SCSI.
I'm still using it because I don't like any of the alternatives. I couldn't ever run Windows given Microsoft's anti-competitive behavior.
