strange sticker on AX-Edge

When I bought my AX-Edge (secondhand) it came with a sticker on the back panel that says "KY022 SAMPLE No. 1". Any idea what that means?

KY022 is apparently the code name for the AX-Edge. For example, if you look at the firmware ZIP archive, the file within the archive is called "ax_edge_sys_v110/KY022_UPA_up.bin".

Other keyboards have similar code names. For example, the big Fantom is KY019.

I can only speculate what "Sample No. 1" refers to in this context. Could it be a pre-production model?

thanks xp30, Thats probably right. The synth was curiously missing the Roland and AX-EDGE logos on the body, and 4 of the buttons (Exit, Enter, Shift, Menu) had been relabeled to match production models. And there was no serial number on the body. But it seems to be fully functional. I just uploaded the 1.1 firmware update successfully.

So, what is a pre-production model? How did it make it out into the world? Does Roland just give out those to their vendors prior to release to the public? Will Roland technicians service the unit in the future?

I would ask the seller where this model is coming from.

I guess beta testers, sound designers and promoters receive models before the final release. I would also assume that there are restrictions on what they can do with these models. For example, I am not sure if they are allowed to sell them, because I doubt that they paid for them.
