USB audio sending all channels, not one

USB audio sending all channels, not one

Hey, guys.

Got the USB driver working on another box and did a test with Cubase.

1. Created a song in the Fantom using tracks 1, 2, 3 and 10.
2. Set the Fantom as the audio interface in Cubase.
3. Added a stereo audio track in Cubase for Fantom track 1 L/R.
4. Armed, started recording, began playback of the song on the Fantom.

The audio that came through was for all four tracks, not Zone 1 as expected. My assumption was that the 16 audio output tracks from the Fantom were exclusive to one and only one of the 16 Zones, e.g. output 1 == Zone 1, output 2 == Zone 2 ... output 16 == Zone 16, etc.

Is there a fundamental concept that I'm missing on this?

Dont know your DAW....

Are you using Basic or Advanced under SYSTEM ?

Basic offers RED or GREEN when layering while Advanced will allow RED, GREEN, YELLOW (SHIFT +Zone knob from 1 to 8 after selecting range of zones either 1 to 8 or 9 to 16).

RED is internal engine.

GREEN is external engine.

YELLOW is BOTH, internal and external.

The way zones behave vary if under BASIC or ADVANCED.

See if you are layering zones, 1, 2, 3 and 10...or any while the Main Zone is not...

Pretty sure I'm using BASIC, I'll give that a look.

Thanks, man!

Then you are to verify also...

USB Audio Mix/Parallel

MIX
All audio signals output from the
FANTOM are mixed to channels
1–2. This is convenient for stereo
recording. Other channels are output
according to their settings.

PARALLEL
The audio signals output from the
FANTOM are output individually
from all channels. This is convenient
for simultaneous multi-channel
recording.

I just re-read your comments about mix / parallel and that's obviously the knob I need to twiddle. It describes exactly what I was getting, the full mix. Put it on parallel and I'm sure that'll solve the problem. Have to take the keyboard to another computer to test, but that should do it.

Thanks again for all your help, man.

Okay, parallel mode fixed the problem and I'm now getting discrete audio for each zone.

However, when I arm midi tracks and point their channels to the zones, I'm not getting any data.

See that the keys being pressed are to match the keyboard ranges
you have selected for each zone..

And, hard to understand, INT and EXT ranges cannot be different, although you will find the appropriate TAB for each, resulting in the unbelievable fact that changes in one affects the other, so if
Zone 1 is restricted to play D1, any instrument in the DAW receiving channel 1 (if that is assigned to zone 1) will not play if you press any other key than D1.

I hope this is a thing to be fixed on that COOL incoming update...
In the mean time I always set a zone playing all MIDI range and then use a script before the voice to manage the actual range or the transposition or to chorderized it.

Also, the inner sound module needs RED or YELLOW in its zone to sound.

Yeah, gonna have to chew on this one a bit more, to be sure. Definitely appreciate the help.

Forgot to mention...

I don't know Cubase, but I use two tracks, one for MIDI and another one for Audio, attending each Zone, 32 tracks for 16 zones.

Track 1 receives MIDI from channel 1 (serving Zone 1) and sends MIDI to channel 1.

Track 2 receives Audio from Stereo input 1/1R.

Eack track is set to Record: input (Audio or MIDI).

Also I want to clarify the layering of the zones: one thing is to have them unlit (not layered, see that keyboard range suddenly extends to all the keys, if any was set) while still being set in red, green or yellow to attend its internal/external/both devices.

The Fantom 7 arrived today. I've changed computers, so the driver problem is resolved, and I had time to explore the things you talked about. As you mentioned INT / EXT was the key to transmitting midi data.

That said, recording midi from the Fantom is less than useful for me because despite what the midi implementation chart says in the manual, it does not transmit start, stop or song position. Because of this, I can't sync Cubase to chase to the Fantom, so anything I record from the Fantom is "wild," i.e. not synced with the Cubase tempo / position. While this is annoying, it's a limitation I can live with. I actually don't intend to record individual parts from the Fantom into Cubase. I bought it in large part for the sequencer.

So, a workflow that gets the job done for me is to record all my parts in the sequencer, build a song, and then export the song midi file. After importing the midi into Cubase and setting up the audio tracks I start recording in Cubase. It transmits the midi parts back to the Fantom, the audio comes out usb to Cubase and gets recorded in the audio tracks. And it's actually faster to export the song midi file than it is to record it in Cubase in real time (if sync actually worked), so all good.

Thanks again for all your patience and help as I worked through the various learning experiences. Now on to making music!
