Why cannot layer sounds in some scenes?

Why is it that in Factory Scene 1-01 the parts cannot be layered? The part buttons are switched on but only the lowest numbered part can be heard. So if i go to Scene 1-01, press the part button, parts 1 & 2 are switched on. But when i play the keyboard i only hear part 1. if i switch off part 1 then i can hear part 2. Compare to Scene 1-02. if i press the part button, parts 1 & 4 are switched on. I play the keyboard and i can hear the two parts layered together. What is the setting that makes the parts in these two scenes behave differently?

Usually means an assignable control (SL or pedal) is assigned to part fade. Very useful on the rare occasion it is needed, but very irritating otherwise.

thanks for the heads up on that...it's like a kind of crossfader...will have to find some use for it now i know what it is and what it does
