Xm velocity sensitivity question

Xm velocity sensitivity question

24 Jul 2020, 01:53
Until now I have been using my Xm (v1.21) but did not pay much attention if the Scenes/tones are velocity sensitive or not. I have created my own Scenes and all of them are perfectly velocity sensitive as I want them to be. Recently, I have imported two banks of Scenes from the Jupiter X (not present on the Xm), and while playing them I have started to notice that in fact many Scenes, tones (not only in the imported Scenes) are NOT velocity sensitive at all (the velocity switch is off of course). Now, I understand that vintage patches requires no velocity sensitivity at all, but I wonder if anything is wrong with my Xm. Turning ON/OFF the velocity switch does not seam to work on many Tones.

Can someone check if the Scene called ("01-02" on the X, "10-02" on the Xm after importing them) Cloud Strings is velocity sensitive? In my case it is not, neither is it's Part 1 , neither it's Part2. Any comment is very much welcome.

Look under the menu settings, in Scene Part, at KBD Vel setting (real vs fixed), and the Velo Sen offset setting. If the setting is REAL, then the fixed velocity is part of the tone setting.

Xm is already packed, since we are changing campsites today, but can check these scenes tonight. (Gotta love Xm portability!)

Thanks.
Looking at this particular Scene (Cloud Strings) and it’s Part1 (JV113-JUNO-106):
Velo Sens=0
KBD velo=REAL,
by these settings this tone is not velocity sensitive.
If I change “KBD velo” to “FIXED”,
this tone (JV113-JUNO-106) stays still not velocity sensitive.

Does this mean that this Tone JV113-JUNO-106
cannot be changed to be velocity sensitive?
Can you please comment?

Note: I do not move my Xm, although sometimes
I feel to take it to my garden between my flowers.

Those settings mean the scene has no impact on velocity. (Real velocity, and no sensitivity adjustment). So all velocity settings are in the tone.

But, there are no velocity settings in the Juno 106 Tone settings.

Looking behind the scenes at that tone (in the hidden ZEN-Core model), osc 1 & 2 velocity settings are on fixed. I sampled a few other JU 106 tones, and saw the same settings.

So looks like the JU 106 model has fixed velocity - true to the original. Guess I would expect nothing less from Roland.

Using the Midi Designer Pro 2 ZEN-Core Editor layout you could change the velocity settings for this tone.

Many thanks for the confirmation and explanation! Clear!

Note: Although I am not into deep editing, the Midi Designer Pro 2 (on my iPad Pro) is already with me. Very cool app, btw. So, usually I just flip over the presets, once I have what is "close" what I need, the Xm front controllers are perfectly OK to adjust the Tone(s) to my liking. I am using my Xm as a very nice addition (in fact my only hardware synth) to my very big orchestral templates and real orchestral recordings :-).
