Difficulty viewing the screen

Difficulty viewing the screen

Hi guys,
I'm wondering if anyone else also faces this - I have a Roland FA06 on a keyboard stand, placed flat horizontally. In my normal playing position, it is quite difficult to see the various fields on the screen. I frequently had to lean forward to edit studio sets. My previous workstation was Korg M50, which had a tilted display, so maybe I am too used to that. I also tried to install the overlay panels that came with the FA. It did not help much, so it's not an issue due to the reflective surface. What do you guys do to solve this? Grin and bear it, or do you try an angled/tilted stand?

Hey dimtira,

Out of curiosity, what is your normal playing position? I honestly haven't really run into this but the majority of my time with my FA-08 is standing at it so I have a good top down. At home I sit on a bench with it on a lower stand and don't really have an issue seeing things.

In the "good ol' days" you would just change the contrast settings so that you can better view the screen at an angle, but sadly the FA-08 doesn't have a setting for that (that I've seen), but it does have an LCD Brightness setting. Maybe if you increase it from the default 10 to something higher it'll help?

I'm not at my studio to test it out before posting, but thought I'd put this out there in the meantime.

I have the FA on this stand at a low setting - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01B15JPCQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I sit on a standard chair that serves as my home office chair as well. So pretty much similar setup as you.

I'm surprised that you have no trouble seeing the screen! Now I think it could be the specific position of the stand vs the light souce which may be responisble.

No, I did not find such a setting - just LCD brightness.

Sorry, I meant brightness - so that probably didn't help. But it, in conjunction with your light source, may help.

I have trouble seeing it at outdoor gigs in bright sunlight and that's about it - it's why you see some touring guys have built a little cardboard "shade" around their screens.

I've had to put a length of wood under the back end of my FA (i.e. across the stand) to tilt it forwards when it sat a little higher than normal.

Not a great longterm solution though, and not ideal for your playing hands either if too much of an angle.

I know there are times where I have a stand light and I end up seeing it in the reflection of my screen brighter than the screen itself, so I have to ensure that the light is angled as to not be seen as a bit white blotch on my screen.

Maybe I'm just used to how it is now but if I went back to my previous Fantom or RD-700GX I'd notice how much better those screens were with contrast adjustment, who knows! I was playing last night and I did notice myself leaning forward a little bit when making adjustments.... not huge and over the screen, but each time I went to change an MFX or tone I caught myself leaning forward a bit!

I saw a live hologram show a few years back and i was curious how it was done, and saw a video like this online:-

Wonder how hard it would be to make a box like that which also reverses the image (So it's correct again), to create a 'heads up' display for any electronic display?

Maybe a good kickstarter idea for someone? Could maybe even have magnification, and the box could be sealed other than the front which should give a good image by blocking out any outside light.

Ha, that would be awesome!

Our church used that same technique last year to "super impose" angels into a scene of people and make them fade in and fade out... was the first time I had seen that technique and totally forgot about it until your YouTube video. It's quite a simple concept with super cool results.

Don't know how it would work with the screen on the bottom but this is a smart community... I'm sure someone would figure out it even if it blocked all the other buttons around the screen and took up lots of space and looked dorky to everyone else ;)
