Custom Rhythm Patterns and Songs

I read the manual, and watched Ed's YouTube tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7wC1AAcOgk) on this, but I am still a bit confused.
How exactly are the Songs and Rhythm Patterns related? I tried to create a new 2 bar pattern on a song, and saved it. I then pressed Rhythm Pattern switch, and held shift and selected Import Song. So far so, good, it imports the newly created pattern in "Pattern A".
Now I wanted to edit the 2 bar song to create a variation for "Pattern-B". When I do this, I find the earlier pattern I had saved also changes. I must be doing something wrong here, so I'm wondering how do you do this?
Do you, for e.g., compose the rhythm pattern for parttern-A in song-1, save it, then compose for pattern-B in song-2, save it, and so on? So upto 6 songs to be saved for a single Rhythm Pattern "user group"? Or is there another way to do this?
