Well, let that be a lesson to you Kevin for posting your frustrations here!
In the end you get a visit from the local Freud carrying a sledge hammer in his hand.
Mind you, whatever he says is for your own good.
My goodness!
What's next, a petition to make Kevin re-write his post using the words Freud dictated and a public apology followed by a confession of sin?
Ahh...come on! My therapy was at least without charge. But I've worked more on the basis of C.G Jung than of Dr. Freud...;)

We came in the night and took Kevin to a secret Roland black site for "reprogramming". By the time they're done, he'll be singing the praises of the JU80 electric pianos!

I tossed out my manual! All I need is Dany's post. Blast...Let me go start "mangling" some of those tones there mates!

What a great thread! No Fanboy rubbish or impudent personal attacks. Just good honest debate on the merits of this synthesizer and even some "pseudo psycho analytical" couch time as well! ;-o

P.S. I hope KK keeps his JP-80

Frustrated not you must get young Synthwalker!

Doogie is a happy camper! Jupiter MIDI problems solved in the Soundworld at last!

After hooking up the Jupiter via the MIDI 2 IN/OUT on the MC-80, I now have access to the full Registration (w/ splits the way it was intended) for sequencing via the OASYS, arpeggio's and all! At first the arp's wouldn't activate, but I realized it was because I had the remote keyboard switch set to "OFF."

Complete acess to all 22 synths at once...it's a beautiful thing!

Next, hooked up the A-880 must get...enough with the daisy chaining already!

The Soundworld abides man... .:':. .:':. .:.

I can't imagine trying to manage 22 synths from an MC80. You're a brave man.

I very rarely would have the need to create sonic "mush" by having all 22 going at once Dev, but it works out quite well since although both the OASYS and Jupiter take up 5 and 4 MIDI channels respectively, the KARMA and Registration/Live Set Split function run off of their respective Global channels.

Plus, I think everyone of the "tracks" on the MC-80 can handle all 16 MIDI channels if need be. For now, I am just happy to be able to incorporate the Jupiter-80 Reg's and Live Sets into the mix the way they were intended.

I just knew it had to be the fault of the mechanic and not the tool!! ;-D

On 2nd thought .
I was just playing the JP-80 last night and WOW , this is the best sounding board ever (IMHO) !
I found out that my frustration with the board was not the JP-80 but me .

Why do we try to reinvent a product once it's released , why not challenge your self to learn the instrument inside out . I'm starting to think this is the difference between amateur and pro .
I'm not saying this about anyone specifically but it does make me wonder .

For me to really appreciate the JP-80 , I had to become a better musician a better producer .

If you know that sound design is your main goal then why not get something that mainly focuses on that
with a tone of knobs .

Kevin mention he didn't like the pads on the JP-80 , I strongly disagree , this is the pad machine that I have been dreaming of but I had to learn to cut some of the tones off in a live set sometime because sometime it can be to much (little things like that ) all of a sudden every thing is so dam warm sounding .

I think people approach a live set incorrectly (IMHO) . You have to turn some tones off some time to get that warmness or lower the volume on some and raise on others mix it up . Or use the amazing tone blender for this very purpose it's perfect and a secret weapon .

Who ever is the person on here who bought two JP-80's is a very smart person .

Don't get me wrong Kevin I would love to see the JP-80 further developed and updated but to me your statement is like saying hey I just bought a car and just found out that it can't fly why the hell didn't they put wing on it and I say why the hell didn't you by an airplane .
He "doesnt like the pads"""??? OMG!! I am a Pad Freak and let me tell you the Pads are the best of any synth I have ever heard!!

Hahaha...i'm still waiting for Kevin's response....come on kevin, dont keep us waiting old boy lol

I know kevin is a smart lad, he made all those AL1 programs for the Oasys when it first came out, there must of been about 60 sounds he gave us...and i believe he also provided us with some really great Combi programs...lots of jazz stuff that i absolutely love and always use when i improvise at the synths.

I appreciate Kevin's honesty, and he makes some very good points. If Roland has a presence on this forum via a rep, they can learn from his insight. If my Jupiter-80 all of a sudden became capable of his suggested upgrades, it would be a far better machine- more flexible control routing, larger memory, different architecture modes... etc. Really- who wouldn't want that?! Hopefully Roland is internally even more critical of their gear then any of their users are.

Some may have taken an issue with his 'tone'. I actually appreciate it... too much fluff and feelings in this world.

M 2 biggest wishes for the JP80: more aftertouch routing options and separate tone/liveset/registration environments.

I don't know much about how computers or how these boards are assembled... I barely grasp ROM vs. RAM. So I don't know if these types of upgrades are even possible, or if such things are limited by hardware.

My 2 favorite things about the JP80: liveset architecture reminds me so much of the D-50 (upper and lower tones each made up of several partials)... Very easy to make new sounds by just recombining them. That alone can get me close to just about any sound I need. My second favorite thing about this board is something that really can't be taken for granted these days: build quality. I've noticed a lot of marquee boards have had a laundry list of known hardware/software issues (aka fails). I'm not aware of any signature issueses associated with the JP80. That is rare earth these days.

Of the different suggestions for upgrades etc. thrown about in this forum, does anyone have a grasp of what types of things are possible via OS update and what isn't? As I stated, I'm not very literate on such things.

Crazy thread!

You know I can't help but think the key to this is simply, if something doesn't work for you, then it doesn't work for you.

We've all be though the feeling of being faced with an instrument that SHOULD work well for us, but just we just can't connect with. I felt like that when I went 100% software with Mainstage and MIDI controllers. Even though I knew Logic's instruments and my other plugs-ins well, and Mainstage was great, I just HATED that setup for live work. Hence buying my Fantom G6 which is pure joy to use. Back in the day I also felt the same about the Korg M1 and 01/W when I used them (couldn't stand them), yet the Roland D-70 (the nuttiest synth ever) completely floated my boat and still does.

Different strokes for different folks. So to the OP, unless you can reassess the way the JP-80 works and get into it, I'd say sell it, forget about it and move on to something that does work for you.
