Keyboard magazine leak

If it is just a nord stage clone it will have a difficult life.

Roland already has a Nord Stage "clone". It's the VR-700. So no, The Jupiter-80 will not be a Nord Stage clone but a full blown synthesizer.

The thing is, Nord's synth engine is much more capable than the one in Jupiter-80, so that makes it a better "synthesizer" actually. But anyways I think Roland's advantage might be in the acoustic sounds and their articulation modeling.

You'll be surprised to know that SH-01 is actually based on the Fantom-G's synth engine, but is less powerful (less tones, less options, less modulation possibilities, less waveforms, less effects), although it is more accessible and easy to program (and that's it's beauty). So you want to pay a few hundred bucks for a cut down copy of what you already have?
I apologize as I haven't played Fantom G that much. However I know I did try Gaia before I went buying Blofeld and Miniak and SH-01 didn't make any "VA" impression on me. Now that I see it borrowed engine out of Fantom G it makes all sense as Fantom G wasn't made to be VA, it's just that it was capable to do something of VA. And if you say Gaia is simplyfied form of what Fantom was capable it all makes perfect sense for me as I find Fantom as all-around synth.

In that case, I don't know, how about bringing JD-800/990 into ARX? I doubt that's also inside Fantom? And as far as I know, ARX isn't just about sound, it's about modeling as well?

wladymeer, JD-800/990 were also similar to Fantom-G, not virtual analogs. You can, in fact, do pretty much everything they did on the Fantom-G, it even has almost all of their waveforms.

Interesting how easy it would have been for Roland to sell you ARX boards of synths that you don't actually need! :-) Roland is wise enough not to do it.

That's because I'm not familiar with G series and I usually try not to talk about such synths so I don't know what's going on with me in last two posts :)

I know (or maybe it's better to say I think that I know :D) that while Fantom X didn't have all waveforms, XV-5080 had whole JD-990, so I guess I should expect that Fantom G would have it as well.

And as there won't be any new Fantom G7, I'm affraid I won't be familiar at all - it's pity to have it so good synth in 61-key model and Jupiter-80 is off my limits - you're from East Europe as well, you know how much $3000 is here :)

it looks like it was for real... there is the identical post over at synthtopia.. perhaps Keyboard Magazine should put their server over in China where the censorship laws are more to their liking!..

Hi all,

We don't believe in censorship, and as journalists, we fully support the free and open exchange of information and speculation about new gear. We love gear ourselves, so in fact, we kind of like to encourage that. :)

The issue in question is not free speech or freedom of the press here, however. The issue is that somehow, a pre-production image of a page from Keyboard was stolen or leaked from a server from which it never should have been accessible.

Several forums, including FutureMusic.com (Dan Brotman) and Synthtopia (the Lewin Group) have acted honorably and ethically in pulling the image. Again - WE'RE NOT ASKING TO HAVE ANY THREADS PULLED - that would be censorship. Just the image that's our property.

We also understand the philosophy that once something is online, freedom of information rules. And we're still investigating how this got out. But think of it this way: Suppose you're in a hurry, a million things are going on, and you leave your back door unlocked by accident. Someone comes into your studio, sticks a USB drive in your computer, helps themselves to a track you've been working on, and posts it on the Internet. Suppose further that the track in question is not a final mix and you're not ready to have it out there.

How would that make you feel?

Our take is that whoever did this is no less a thief than if they'd smashed a window to get in. We're still trying to determine whether we left the back door open or someone broke a window, so to speak, but stealing is stealing.

I thank everyone who honored our request to take the image down, especially Dan at FutureMusic.com, Jules at GearSlutz, and the Lewins at Synthtopia. I also apologize for the heavy-handed tone of my original post, but to Mystic 38, who referred to me as a jerk, I'd say not to shoot the messenger. I was posting here because I DIDN'T want to see this great forum catch any heat from corporate types who, if you think I'm a jerk, you really don't want to be on their radar. Again, I'm sorry if the urgency of my original tone caused my intentions to be mis-interpreted. Best regards,

Then Mr Fortner, i suggest you start investigating your own staff on this matter, not signing up and raking around on music forums playing the private tec trying to find the culprit. Always start your investigations in your back yard first. If it was a member of your staff who leaked it, then you should fire them.

Anyway it's too late, the special JP-80 review is out there on the internet for all to see.

As for Roland they've already shot themselves in the foot.

If I were you, Stephen, I'd investigate this 'HoodedClaw' character! I mean, look at him; he's wearing a dark overcoat with a black large brimmed hat and glasses! . . . Looks awfully suspicious to me! And with a name like that, he surely can't be up to any good!

While I can understand your motives and objectives, I did find your approach indeed to be very heavy handed and thoroughly inappropriate, and one which certainly did not reflect well on your magazine (to which incidently i subscribe).. To my mind there are certainly times when "damage limitation" can cause more damage than the original and this could quite possibly be one.

There is no doubt that the appropriate response was privately to a moderator or administrator of this forum, and i appreciate that you have acknowledged this and apologised.. btw, I also give you personal credit for posting your follow-up explanation & apology .. so from my perspective you can at least remove the "jerk" tag :)
