External Midi output issue

External Midi output issue

7 Jun 2010, 16:15
Am using a Fantom G7 as master controller in a studio setup.

After updating to the latest OS, it seems that I have apparently lost immediate external MIDI control.
I use the G7 sliders for many external functions: volume, pan, as a second modulation input control and to write fader CC info for my Yamaha 02R mixer. After looking at all the MIDI related threads, I called Roland tech support. The tech I spoke with was not aware of the output issues. Here’s what we concluded: In order to output MIDI CC you must go to the CONTROL page, scroll down to CNTRL SWITCH and hit EXTERNAL. MIDI transmission of the faders and assigned controllers will immediately work once you follow this sequence (I use LIVE and SINGLE mode.)

A quick work around is to save the above page as a Favorite. When you choose the Favorite stored selection, it should appear as an EXTERNAL patch

In the first versions of the OS many complained that since all parts, internal, ARXs and External, were activated this lead to some confusion for those using the sequencer (all parts were recorded even if not used) and external gear (making it sound when you did not want to). This was then change and you now have to efectively activate all external related parts/controllers if you want to use them. So this is not a "bug". It was just a change on how the G shipped from factory.
I edited the thread tittle to avoid confusion,

Thanks for the clarification.

My complaint with this software choice is a lack of a toggle. It would be beneficial to have an external MIDI selection option and have it storable per patch rather than having to make so many button strikes and scrolls to get there.

This may have well been a design choice, but it seems odd that once you reach the external page, transmission of MIDI is instantaneous. At least the Favorites choice works for my needs and hopefully others using the G as master controller.
