How do you backup your JUNO-G?

How do you backup your JUNO-G?

Hi,

I have made a lot of Performances and spent quite a lot of time mixing patches, tweaking effects, etc, to suit the various songs we do.

I used to back this up to my PC using the librarian software. This wasn't ideal because it meant having to take a laptop out to gigs just in case the unthinkable happened and I had to restore a backup from the librarian software.

Now, I've bought a PC card and have been using the backup facility on the JUNO-G. I also copy the backup from the card onto my PC and keep old versions of it, just in case I need to get back to a performance set up for an older song. But I just take the card out with me to gigs, so if the worst comes to the worst I should be able to restore my most recent backup.

The thing is, I just made a couple of new performances for some new songs we're doing and then did a backup. But when I copied the new backup to the computer I noticed that the files were exactly the same as the previous backup! So now I'm worried that I'm not actually backing up what I thought I was backing up!?

Does anyone know what actually gets saved when using the backup utility? And, how does everyone else deal with backing up their performances?

Cheers, IanR

JUNO-G's main sound file (JUNOG.SVD) already has all patch/performance slots saved in there, so if you add any new sounds to the free user locations, the file size doesn't change. Stay calm ;-)

Thanks, but it's not just the file sizes...I've compared the files using a comparison tool (Beyond Compare - http://www.scootersoftware.com/) and it says the binary files are exactly the same!?

I've tried it a few times - sometimes deleting the contents of the card first then saving a new backup to it, but still the files seem to be the same.

Something's not right...I'll keep investigating!

Has anyone actually restored a backup and can confirm that it does store the performances as well? Obviously, I'm reluctant to try it just in case I end up losing everything!

Well, I've been doing some experimenting and it all seems to be behaving as expected!?

Making an initial backup file, then making some changes to a performance and backing up again produces a backup with a different SVD file.

Reverting the changes back to what they were and backing up produces an SVD file that's the same as the initial backup.

So, I'm calmer now, thanks Artemiy ;-)
...but just a little confused about what was going on earlier.

I feel I need to test a full restore from back up to be sure...but I think I'll wait until I'm feeling a bit braver, and haven't got any gigs coming up for a while!?

Cheers.

To make a manual backup, just connect to your computer via USB storage mode and copy the ROLAND folder from the JUNO-G to your hard drive.

there are two areas where you can save your work:
"user" - that's juno's built-in flash memory.
"card" - you know what that is.

the backup utility simply backs up the "user" contents onto the card.
it all still resides on the juno-g. not much of a backup, if you ask me.
most of my work is on the card, anyway.
my card got corrupted once and i lost everything on it. since then, i back up to a pc.
if you don't want to bring a laptop with you for emergencies, why don't you just make a duplicate card and carry it in your pocket.
