MC909 seperate outs

i want to lay 4 tracks down into cubase simultaneously. am i right to assume i can approach it as channel 4 - direct out 2 (right), channel 3 - driect out 2 (left), channel 2 - direct out 1 (right), channel 1 - direct out 1 (left)?
I have panned the tracks according to the direct out and it works for 4,3,& 2, however when i get to direct out 1 (left) it will not send a signal. if i pan the channel back towards the middle then there is signal.
any thoughts?
