Awesome, now we have something to do before it’s time to perform!

I have 3 synths above eachother in my keyboard stand. The Fantom G is on floor 1. The d-beam hits the bottom of the synth on floor 2. = d-beam always on approx 80% level. What to do? Is there a calibration or senisitivity that can be adjusted as I can think of this being a problem for many G owners?

jessej, no sadly there isn't from the normal menus. I have the same prolem where the d-beam, errr, beams on to the underside of a shelf. Leaving it on about 30% all the time.

Maybe the service modes, but I haven't checked there...

How about placing a mirror on the bottom of the second synth? Place it under a slight angle to prevent the IR beam from being reflected back into the sensor.

That will not help with the range Arjan.

I still wish Roland would have a x-y pad or a ribbon controller instead of that (pesky) d-beam. I only get the feel that the d-beam is unmusical and a gimmic. A ribbon can actually be played, like on the JP-8000 it is an extremely handy tool.

I thought your problem was with triggering something with it and that it was doing this on its own. But if range is your problem, take a mirror and but it directly above the D-Beam sensor under a 45 degree angle and you should be able to divert beam and control it by moving your hand horizontally instead of vertically.

Totally agree, I never use the D-beam. But even the ribbon on my JP-8000 gets very little use; I have the expression pedal assigned to it instead for easier pitch bending while playing solo's and morphing the sound with the epression pedal at the same time (but independently).

I thought everyone knew about this? One of the first things I noticed on the G was the D-beam symbol appearing in the bottom corner of the tennis game. Swiping your hand at different angles and severity doesn't seem to affect the trajectory of the ball, sadly.

In terms of the D-beam, outside of outrageous pitch bending, and some neat filter manipulation, it's really more of a performance gimmick than a tool for sound design. I spent ages trying to find the sweet spots on one of my patches in order to replicate the laser harp descending bass notes on Rendezvous Pt. 2! I never managed to get it quite right, but I got close.

Yes. I have an expression pedal on my JP-8000 too. That+the ribbon = X-Y controller.

The ribbon with hold function is also great for LFO speed, rotary effects, filters and the likes. you set it to 80% and it stays there... I haven't found any useful way to do this with the d-beam (if it would be working).'

Video games could be what the d-beam is really useful for... Thou I wish the fine people at Roland would rather have spent time on developing the OS instead of making games... althou 'easter eggs' are always fun. :/
