MV 8800 Timestretch

MV 8800 Timestretch

Just borrowed a MV 8800 from a buddy who never used it anyway and I am loving it so far.

I also have a FG and have been sending samples to the MV to free up polyphony... one of my clients can be very temperamental and ambiguous and I know he will want to change the tempo for some of his songs. My problem is the timestretch function... I have read the manual and the support documents and the "x 1-10" deal is still confusing... can someone make this a little more clear to me...

This is called the Base Note. This tells the MV how to interpret the actual time of the sample based on the BPM of the sequence. This value is largely what makes the realtime Timestretching possible and accurate.

*In most cases the sound of sample is instantly mangled when Timestretching is activated. This is because the Base Note value is off by a mile.

The first thing you see is a note symbol .By default this is a 1/4 note. So the if the value is 1/4 note x 10 this means (by your count) there are 10 quarter notes in the sample. This works well for short samples but what about longer samples.

If you have 16 bar vocal passage it's impractical to count 1/4 notes for 16 bars. Instead we change the value to Whole Notes and simply make it ... "whole note x 16"

The idea is to get the strongest approximate value so the the timestretch has solid starting point. 99% of the time this more than good enough.

If you want to be accurate with an odd sample, lets say 6 bars and a single quarter note , just do a bit of math.

6x4+1=25 this means the Base Value is exactly:
1/4 note x 25

As with anything based on math, the smaller values such as 1/8, 1/16, and 1/32 notes can reveal the most accurate counts if you need to be spot on.

*If you can learn to use the smaller values your Timestretching can be nearly flawless.

Hope this helps!

Now this is a detailed explanation. I would like to see every response to a question as detailed as this. Great job of explaining, it helps me.
