I NEED HELP!!! Artemiy... Anybody?

26 Jun 2008, 09:28
Last night, I encountered a problem with my Fantom workstation. For some reason, it will not recognize the information on the memory card. First of all, the samples will not auto load when I power on. When I try to access the card to quick play or load tracks I get an error message that says the disc is UNFORMATTED! If I remove and re-insert the card, song names come up on the display. But they still will not load into the sequencer. Its really strange, since the file utility confirms there is information on the card.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

If I were to reformat the card, will all my data be lost?

Please HELP!!!

try first a backup

Hello,
first of all, in order not to loose data, you should try to copy everything from the card to some other support, preferabily a computer hard disk.
The data should be copied with all the directoy structure as it is on the card.
It is also possible that the card be damaged (the CF cards are quite sensitive to mechanical and electromagnetic shocs) .
If you (re)format the card, you might lose all your data.
Once you have a backup copy, you could try to format the card, then copy back the saved data to it.

I wish you good luck,

Yeah, I'm sure the problem lies in the memory card. Because when I insert a different card, I don't have the same problem. Can't figure out how this could have happened. But I definitely would like to avoid this occurrence in the future.

Could I just drag and drop the Roland folder from the card onto a hard drive? Will this save all the programs and settings stored on the card (svq's, samples and all)? I'm afraid to totally lose all the info on the card, as I have put countless hours of work into it.

Any ideas as to why it would say the card is UNFORMATTED? I just don't get it...

is commonly knowed that the Fantom X don't like us to touch its files and folders. If you have, accidentaly, moved or copied a file using a PC it may not recognized the card anymore. I had this issue 1 or 2 times at the very beggining when I had my X7. I never used the PC to do this anymore and I did all file operation from within the Fantom. I'm also used to do several backups of my work since the beggining of times ;-)

There's a strong possiblilty this could be the reason I'm having problems. The last thing I did on the Fantom was copy some samples from the card to my PC. Perhaps I mistakenly moved a file some where it shouldn't have been. Not absolutely sure, but it is probable.

Do you know if there is any way I can fix this?

Hey! I'm Anybody!! =)

I would love to help you out. Unfortunately, I have no great words of wisdom to share. Personally, I find that technology has the power to drive me crazy!
Hmmmm . . .Might I suggest 'therapy'?

As you can see, I am also working through some issues right now. (I hate leather couches! They fell so sticky! And you never know who was on these before you! Ewwww!! It creeps me out just thinking about it!! Why can't my shrink buy one of those 'micro-fibre' things with all the 'millions' he makes off of me?!!)

So let me get this straight... If I copy all the memory card data (ie. svq's, samples, etc.) via usb to my hard drive, reformat the card, and then save the data information from the PC back to the Memory Card, I should be good, right?

As you can probably imagine, I would really prefer not to lose all that work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ok, so I finally took the plunge. I copied the files from the card to my PC. Reformatted the card, and replaced the empty folders with the card info previously saved to PC. To my delight, the song folders were fully accessible. However some of the patches would not trigger. I am still having a problem with loading samples. The Fantom will not allow me to load samples from the save/load menu. Neither will they auto load when I power on. The system just gets hung up just about when the samples are finished loading.

I feel like I've made progress towards fixing this problem. But since the samples will not load I'm afraid that this progress has been pretty much useless. Is it possible one of the samples (wav) files are corrupted, thus making the system freeze? Or can it be something else?

I've already tried different cards, and they all work fine. All but this one. It just so happens this is the one I need the most. Please help...

I have had this problem with 2 cards.......after lots of messing about I ended up throwing them in the bin after backing them up to the PC.
I then bought 2 new cards, copied the data onto them and havent had the problem since

I've had this problem before and I was able to correct it by using the chkdsk utility in Windows. It renames all of the files as file001, File002, etc. But I was able to recover 100% of my songs and samples. Not sure if this will work for you now since you have already formated the card. I have responded to several people on this board over the years with this solution and it seems to have worked for everyone.

The easiest method to test if its a card problem or the sample data is to just load your files from the hard disk onto a new card or at least a different card than the one you were using and see if the data loads up. If it does then I would say trash the old card and go with some new ones. If it does not load then I would sugest looking at the files you loaded most recently and save them to a different folder on the hard disk. then try to load the data again. The thing with the Fantom is that its more of a computer than anything else. When its loading off your card its loading the equivelent of a Registry structure and if there has been data added or deleted without the proper changes the Fantom will freak out. Give that a shot!! As a parting word of wisdom, always have a back up of your back up.
I actually have 2 identical SD cards and 2 identical adapters with me everywhere my band travels. On top of that my bands vocalist has a copy of the file structure including Raw samples on her laptops hard drive. I have a copy of the image saved to cd rom that is in our bus or van and I have a copy on my home computers hard drive as well.
All this may sound nuts, but I have never been in a situation where the show was stopped due to data loss :) !!
