Fantom G USB touch pad?

Fantom G USB touch pad?

Anybody tried a USB touch pad on the G as yet? I think it would be better than rolling around a mouse..

I think you should try the G without a mouse. The interface is the fastest I have seen on any synth to date, and the mouse has the most use when you are in sequencer mode arranging phrases.

I have a mouse connected, but hardly ever use it tbh.

I haven't, but it may work if the touch pad has a 'relative coordinates' mode, ie emulates a mouse, that you can set as the default on power up. I don't think the Fantom will understand absolute coordinates coming from a touchpad. That may not be such a bad thing as it may seem; using relative mode may reduce the amount of movement you have to make to get where you want.

I have thought about trying one myself but I'm not at all convinced that it will work better than a mouse. I think you will want to choose a pad/stylus with ergonomic access to the right/second 'mouse' button since for example selecting new patches for a part requires that you click the right mouse button, not the left. Generally speaking, the right button does what the Enter button does on the Fantom front panel.

The first time I tried the G was with an old Mac mouse that only had one button. It was nearly useless. The next time I took my own PC mouse and that worked much better, but I did actually end up using the front panel quite a bit.

Perhaps a touchpad with a mouse-styled 'stylus' would be nice, if the G supports absolute coordinates. This would have the advantage of being able to let go of the mouse/stylus combined with perhaps the comfort of absolute coordinates which basically means you'll never have to pick up you mouse to continue scrolling one direction when reaching the end of your (mouse) pad. The downside as stated before is that you may have to move your mouse/stylus longer distances than in relative mode.

Touch pad will not work because it needs drivers..
But at the moment im not finding much benefit using a mouse, it does not allow what you expect in mouse functionality.

Not if it can emulate a mouse and work in relative mode and come up like that on power-up. The following suggests that such tablets exist:

Like most touchpads the Elantech touchpad can be in two modes. One is called relative mode in which the touchpad uses its internal controller to translate touching the pad and moving your finger into mouse movement updates. In this mode the touchpad acts just like a normal wired mouse.
I don't know if this is a common feature for touch pads / tablets. I looked briefly on the Wacom website but found no information on it regarding hardware based mouse emulation. Didn't look very hard though.

Another possibility might be to use a a trackball which I'm pretty sure will just present itself as a standard mouse.

Old thread, but I was excited to discover a touchpad that works from ergonomictouchpad.com. Bought it for my mac but of course had to try it out on my G7. Works great, and because it is thin & velcro-backed, you can stick it conveniently right on the G7 frame. I attached a photo of the small pad which is perfectly usable and I'll probably use the small one even though I have the larger version too. Have to deal with the cord somehow (probably with tape), but except for that the pad is unobtrusively flat and out of the way. I like this better than a mouse; couldn't keep my mice on the G7 because gravity slowly slid them downward onto the keys.

ThreeTwo... hey thanks for sharing. I will order one too! Is that the small or the large pad you have in the pic?

Shakil: He told that is the small one.

ThreeTwo: How the buttons works on that? You have right and left buttons? Thanks

I'm going to use the small touchpad. The large pad works fine, it will just be a choice by preference of where you are going to put it. I attached a picture comparing the two sizes.

It behaves like a laptop trackpad with no separate physical buttons, where you tap to click. tapping in the upper right corner sends a right-click.
