is skip back sampling useful?

Hi,
is anybody actually using skip back sampling?
This is only 30 or 40s right? so what's the benefit?
And I heard that the volume level is lower then original,
is it true?

It is not useful.

It is HIGHLY useful.

Even if I'm only using it to review what I've played and not even keep the sample, it's more than worth it ... While I do wish I could set the sample length even longer than 40 secs ... I do find that a very useful length ...

the resultant sample may be a little less "loud" than the original signal ... but 1) doesn't really bother me (the main thing is to get the levels right in the first place) 2) it's indicative of the entire Fantom sampling engine and not just SBS ...

I've set mine to its maximum length, since I have a LOT of sample RAM now (40 seconds?). Before I bought my Fantom-X, I thought I would be using the skipback sampling feature like crazy. I don't think I've used it more than once yet (and the skipback time was then set too short, and I didn't even capture what I was trying to get!). Now that you guys mention it, I just realized the two main reasons WHY I don't use it:

• Audio tracks recorder too easy to use.
• Samples are too tedius to edit in the Fantom-X, IMO—it seems just easier for me to, "get it right," playing it, "live," again, and put it exactly where it belongs, "live," while recording in the audio tracks recorder.

It is EXTREMELY useful. You can capture the sounds you would have lost otherwise, you can do quick sampling without going to any special mode, etc.

Obviously different views, Krakow. I've had my X8 for six months now and use skip back only to show off when I have friends play it - BUT - just the other day while mindlessly noodling I lurched uncontrollably into brilliance and was able to capture it with skip back and then work it. So I say - can't hurt.

Sigh...I wish I could do that. Sometimes what *I* really need is another button next to skip back sampling labeled with a little picture of a toilet flush handle. :-)

Anyway, I don't use the feature much myself, but there have been a few times when it was indispensable for certain tracks I have worked on. I certainly would rather have it than not.

Thats one of my most favorite features in the Fantom S. I use it now and then, when inspiration strikes. So yes, its very useful for me.

If at first you dont succeed, then skydiving is definitively not for you.

yeah, I can understand some benefits but when I'm noodling sometimes for 30 minutes or more, 40s is not enough to recall something. Much easier just turn recording on.
Again 40s is too short because I usually remember what I've played just minute before... (unless I'm stoned) :)

Skip back sampling is a great feature without doubt. But what about something similar for midi events? I mean how many times it was to play something really great yet to forget how just moment when stopped?

Yeah I know - just transcribe from skipback sampling. ;)
Hard On!

I agree completely with the MIDI statement.

That was actually one of my first big disappointments about SBS ... that it didn't capture MIDI events ... it's pretty stupid, actually ... but, IMO, editing notes on the Fantom is such a pain (on the other hand ... I'm still glad it's there ... I just wish it was more like a DAW, which it COULD have been, but probably will be in the next edition ...

I had used it for capturing sound samples, esp. sound effects. Turnings knobs and other controllers until the sound is what you want to hear is so easy.
Quick setup for a sample on a pad is a small step afterwards.
Concerning the Midi question, Diametro, I use the onboard sequencer.
It depends what are your intentions.

The purpose of SBS is to record performance data without having to be in a Record mode ... that should apply to piddly MIDI notes as well as audio ...

I understand I could be in sequencer RECORD all the time ... but for some reason, as soon as I press RECORD, my ability to play falls about 25 percent ... after about five takes, it will be back where it needs to be ...
