Drum rolls and pad controllers

Drum rolls and pad controllers

26 Jul 2007, 12:28
Hi all,
I have had a fantom Xa(Which I truly love) for about 2 1/2 weeks. And I have learned a lot more about it thx to this great forum. I have two questions though.

1. Is there a drum roll function(like the mpc note repeat)? While searching through the forums I thought I saw a reference to a Roll button, But I don't see anything like that on the Xa.

2. Im looking at drum pad controllers. I used to have an asr-X pro(Got stolen) and figure some nice drum pads would be a lot more comfortable when sampling and doiing drums. I am leaning towards the korg padKontrol. I know there are a few here that use it. I have heard good things about how its pads feel. I mostly would like to know if anyone has major complaints about this unit? and I noticed there was a drum roll feature on it(at least thats wat the pictures lead me to believe) and I wanted to know if that worked well? and If it had to be connected to a computer to use the roll feature? I will not be connecting this through a pc most of the time so its important that whatever I get is strong as a standalone. I don't want to pay extra for this when I won't get any use out the feature I want most out of it.

I use the padKONTROL along with my Fantom X6 & XP80 workstations...

I actually have the Midi "Out" of the PK to the Midi "In" of the XP80 and Then Midi "Out" of the XP80 into the Fantom x6 Midi "In"

This enables me to use the XP80 AND the padkontrol as controllers for the Fantom...In addition to being able to control sounds in the XP80 with the padkontrol (which I the outputs routed BACK into the Fantoms inputs to be recorded via Audio Track)

The whole thing works FLAWLESSLY!!!

The "Roll" & "Flam" functions work VERY well...
The PK may not have all the "Controllers" (Sliders/Knobs) that Other pad controllers but It is extremely capable at what it does....you can do some CRAZY stuff with the X/Y pad that you just wont be able to do on the MPC....

You shouldnt have to pay more than $150.00 for one at this date and time....

Check it out!!!!

Natural Black, if your only getting this for the repeat feature, I would dig deep to see if you can't already do this on your Xa. The X6 has a dedicated pad that turns repeat on and off. You can also set how fast you want it in combination with the tempo. Like 1-8, 1-16, or 1-32 etc. I cant imagine the Xa would not have this simple function... Good luck. (Though that effects pad on the Korg looks like it would add a whole new dimension to the X! Like a timetrip pad from the V on the X.)

Does the Pad Kontrol internally generate MIDI messages ... like with the flam/roll feature ... ???

I'm not sure...

I know that it does generate SOME midi messages however since it doesnt have an internal clock it cant be synced to other gear....You can adjust the timing of the "Roll/Flam" to MATCH the tempo of your sequencer but It will have to be triggered with proper timing for it to work....

ALSO

The roll feature on the X/Y pad works a little differently from the "Roll" on the fantom....On the PK you MUST touch the pad in order for it to function and The HOLD button does not make the roll play continuously like it does on the fantom....rather it HOLDS the Last value constant so that you can "Lock" in a roll's speed once you have it perfect and dont want to change it...

these are minor differences but important to know starting out...

Its not just the roll that I need. Its just padKontrols roll sets it apart from the other pad based controllers. I still need drum pads because the Xa only has buttons to trigger samples. I have been searching hard for a roll feature on my Xa. I noticed the bigger fantoms had the button right by the pads under the hold button. I have looked through the manual, Im sure there isn't any button labled for this on the unit itself. I have also Tried using the shift key while pressing buttons related to the pads I have yet to find anything.

If anyone with an Xa knows where I should be looking plz chime in.

I figured there might have to be some playing with the settings to get the PK to sync to my Xa right. Anything is better than nothing. Thanks for the heads up on hw the roll works Bigbro. The PK still covers my most base needs, If it really came down to it I could live without the roll my ASR never had one.

Thanks again
