converted from software to my fantom

i use both. i have pro tools or sonar 6 depending on what i'm doing and i have TONS of GREAT vst's (Cakewalk's Rapture, Battery 2, Sax Labs, and the great ones in Pro Tools and Sonar 6 PE).

i also have my X6 which has GREAT sounds which i use alot but the Xpand plugin in Pro Tools is insane for Arpeggios parts and i gotta sya, alot easier to configure than the X's Arpeggiator which is great.

i am just doing what came naturally and getting the best of both worlds.

i have been doing this since the 80's. Watch who you are talking to about skills. I was decieved just like your self untill I broke out my old hardware and remembered why I bought it. Like said marketing schemes. They will make you rush out too buy the latest and greatest when you have all you need already. After ugrading to latest versions, upgrading ram, possibly upgrading your computer you have spent way more money for something that mimicks something you could have already owned. I speak from experience if you disagree leave a respectful response or just shut up and just do you. No need to speculate on a persons amount of skills Mr. CLYDE or whatever your name is.

I agree i find doing arpeggios on the computer easier. when i said i will not buy any more software i never said i will never us what i already have. hypersonic 2 and emulator x2 are pretty good for certain things. i like using my emulator x for creating arps.

Software tend to be bigger and bigger and I'm not sure if it's a good thing. There are also companies which encumber users with nasty copy protection schemes. For me it's quite hard to swallow any hassle just to be able to record some timbres or melodies, Personally if not for some quantity related issues with machines like Fantom (could use more MFXs, audio tracks, etc.) then point of sticking with a PC for music purposes would be nil.

Fortunately there are developers which understand what a sanity is and write small and efficient software - Reaper or EnergyXT for examples.

I wonder why you guys don't use fantom sequencer if you use fantom sounds? Most of amateurs don't know how to lead properly more then 2 maybe 4 voices anyway, so workstation with 16 track plus 8 audio is more then enough. Plus it's easier to use and everything under control in one place.

^^^^^ I Agree!

It is a TOTAL waste of $$$$ to but a Fantom Workstation if you KNOW you are going to sequence in software...It's cool to have options...but I see LOTS of people with 5 or six different sequencers in their studio. More times than not the are NOT really "Well Versed" in all of them anyway. The may know how to use One really good and the others maybe a little bit.

Me personally....I dont use software...not because I hate it....but because I don't need to. I have 2 workstations (XP80 & Fantom X6) that I use in tandem and that is all I need for now...If I feel that I need more sounds I will get something in rackmount or perhaps some SRX cards. The more streamlined your setup is the better. (K.I.S.S.) with the capabilities of the fantom....you dont really need anything else...if you want it, that's cool. But you dont NEED it. I have done lots of songs using JUST the Fantom...before that...I did an entire album using JUST the XP80.....It CAN be done...

I am sitting a work right now with my Manuals by my side trying to learn MORE about the gear that I have and increase my expertise with it...I dont really care about keeping up with the Jones'. I make good music with what I have....

That's all that matters anyway......

I use Juno-G's sequencer... have made some songs with it. It does work exactly as it should (save few tricks I know how to fool it). The step recorder and quantize are way better than in any software I could find. Microedit could be more "visual" but I prefer to rerecord faulty pieces anyway than fix them by editing.

I wish I'd got FantomX6 in the first place... then rest of my gear. Lack of patterns and RPS can be tiresome in J-G.

People tend to like computer sequencers because they are more visually attractive. They also give an illusion of safety because of "you might fix it later easily" mindset,

I need just midi tracking and not much more. In that sense all those big software DAWs are wasteful indeed. They more geared for audio technician than musician. Yet they are marketed for everyone basically like a magic bullet to make someone creative.

I think software v hardware is an ongoing war.
there will always be pro`s and cons.
personaly i like the hardware end, but sometimes im thinking..
hey why do i need all this hardware when i can do it all on the laptop.
if latency was 0 i think you could go software.
but for now hardware is king.

Business wise it has ended already. The big "three" (Cakewalk, Cubase and Logic) are already subsidiary of hardware companies. The most progress can be seen in small developers. Sometimes I wonder for what big companies are charging for?

With modern computer and decent audiocard you should be able to set buffer size of 64 samples. That is for PCI and PCMCIA/CARDBUS audio interfaces. Might be bigger for USB/Firewire ones thought...

In 2017 I'm sure I will still have my Korg M1R,Wavestation...and other hardwaresynths.
I wonder if the korg legacy collection will run on Windows 2018 or Linux Green Hat, Ubuntu 718.

Compuers are changing quickly, but too quickly to be a stable platform for music. Hardware sequencers, samplers, synths and MIDI are there because some people just want to make music.

Play with software by all means and make some serious music with it, but you will not be able to run your current setup in 10 years time. I challenge anyone to reply to this thread in 10 years time and prove me wrong :)

Cheers,
B

Well here's my $.02. For me, I do most songs in the Fantom X and use its midi and audio trax for live performance and songwriting. When I am ready to take the trax to the studio for recording, I dump the midi and record audio to Reaper or Sonar and we go from there with EFX and re-recording vocals. The software platform does offer much more flexibility in the EFX and tracking realm.

But, if I need to use anything that was done in the studio in a live setting, I just make a wav clip of it and load it into the Fantom X and assign it to an audio track and send it out of the B outputs. It's been working great for me.

So, I am trying to make the best of both worlds and it seems to be working for us.

fantom for inspiration. Computer for writing. Fantom for sample manipulation. Computer for mixdown.
