mc 808 as a simple sample play back device ?

I can edit my samples on my sp808ex and seq loops in ableton.

what I'm looking for is a simple live box. I don't need a sample editor, I have soundforge, just something that will play loops and that I can use live effects on rather than modulating and mastering effects as everything will be primed for use elsewhere like I said.

Will the 808 be good for this ? I was looking at an mpc and although the equipment is finished to a pro spec, I love roland effects and I am going to be using loops mostly.

I'm worried about the filters on it, I find rolands groovebox filters a joke really...horribly rezzy and they step to death. On the youtube vidz of the 808 that filter sounds too harsh for sweeps etc...more for harsh sound design ?

would it be very fun to use live...i'm not sure how I will like pushing faders instead tweeking pots? I could rig up my oxy 8 and assign pots from that I suppose.

I don't understand why people would prefer not to have the soft editor for sound design on the 808. I would see that as a big bonus.
I think from the advertising it is obvious that this is a prep at home on your pc and play out live box no ?

I was looking forward to doing some tr series style editing with my own drum kits, but I see that you can, but it so much hassle to prep it is not worth the energy. Especially when there are some serious tr808 clones about now in vsti.

One of the things that I would like to know is whether you can spread the rhythm kits over the tracks ?
I am stuck on my d2 (mc505) with having the kit on the 'r' track, which means you can only pan the whole kit..not individual drum. You can call up certain drums to other tracks,,,but normally have them maxed out with other sounds ;(.

That's a lot of questions I know lol feel free to break it down peeps.
mc808 as a simple loop player is my main point I guess ;)
Bang da box!

Hi Mr. hooker :-)

when you prepare your sounds and drum sets you can easy fire samples from the 16 pads.

Possible drawbacks:
- All samples needed to be loaded to the memory from the cf card. That can take up to 15 minutes for 512 MB
- The pads are NOT velocity sensitive
- There is no real multisampling
- To setup patches or drum patches some work is needed

The sound:
Very much like a roland fantom. Its the same sound engine. The effects in the groovebox i find very nice and useable but i like the korg effects on my radias a little bit more.

Filters:
They are digital filters with 12 db. There is a trick to combine them for 24db which is needed for a more analog vintage sound.

Sound clarity is good for my flavour. Its exact the same what you get from the fantoms but misses a little the clearness and power that you get from the MOTIF-ES/XS.

See this beloved monster as a fantom synth hidden in a groove box. And i like the motorized faders very much, they are pure fun for me :-)

Ciao, Dirk.

djayhooker:

i'd take a look at SP-404.
it's a simple, cheap sampler/looper, which CAN play ANY sample length without glitches. people report playing back complete 10 minute backings with no hassle.

on mc-808 with samples longer than 1 minute you will experience performance lags (as of OS v 1.03) - i checked that myself.

so, for quick, problem-free phrase sampling i'd take 404

hope this helps.
