controlling MFX in performance mode

controlling MFX in performance mode

Hi everybody.

Something's bugging me, and I can't figure it out by trying or reading the manual (which I don't get regarding this point).

It has to do with real time control of the MFX in a performance.

Let me explain the situation.

I have an external Studiologic masterkeyboard attached to my Fantom-S. I want to set up a performance in the FS with a piano sound played through the masterkeyboard and a Hammond sound (internal FS sound) played on the FS-keyboard.

A little restriction: the master keyboard only sends data on MIDI channel 1, so I have to set the piano part (part 2 in my performance) to RxCh=1. So, I set part 1 (the Hammond sound) on RxCh=2, because I don't want a layered pno/organ sound when I play my Studiologic. So far, so good.

Now, I want to be able to control the speed of the inserted rotary effect from an assignable knob. But I somehow don't manage to get this working.

Applying modulation from pushing the wheel results in speeding up the rotary effect. But this costs one hand, so I want to assign the speed change to an assignable rotary knob.

In the effects menu, I set the MFX2-control to modulation (because modulation applied by the wheel works out). No result: when turning the knob, the speed doesn't change. What does happens is modulation on the piano sound (!) (= part 2, set on MIDI RxCh=1), but that's not what I want...

I went through numerous menu's: MIDI-filter, the control assigning menus and the effects control menu (within the effects section) and everything seems to be logically set. But eventually, it doesn't work out.

Using these control settings has to do with MIDI cc numbers and I don't want to pretend to understand this completely (otherwise, I'd probably fix the problem in no-time). So perhaps my lack of understanding of this subject is the root of the problem.

Anyway, who can guide me to the solution?

Thanks very much!

A small bump on the subject. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

In the MFX 1/2/3 Control screens, there is an MFX control channel parameter. Set it to the number of the part that you want to control the effect with.

To the part number of to the MIDI channel number? I interchanged parts and MIDI channels (part 1 on RxCh=2 and part 2 on RxCh=1).

Sometimes (in some menus), it seems that the FS uses "part" while meaning "MIDI channel". May be my misinterpretation, though.

Gonna try your suggestion immediately. Thnx!

Sorry, but it doesn't work. The rotary speed still doesn't respond to the assignable rotary knob. In the MFX control menu (in the MFX submenu of the rotary effect), I set source to "cc1 modulation" and destination to "speed" (sensitivity to the maximum value of +63). In the Performance general "ctrl setting" menu, I set assignable knob 1 to "cc1 modulation".

So with knob 1 assigned to "cc1 modulation" and setting source "cc1 modulation" to destination "speed", it should work, shouldn't it?

Another question popped up after reading Artemio's post. The MFX can influence more than one part in performance mode, right? So somehow, it doesn't make sense to set a MFX control channel to only one channel, corresponding to only one performance part.

Artemio, can you clearify this? Or someone else?

Thanks in advance again.

>> So somehow, it doesn't make sense to set a MFX control channel to only one channel, corresponding to only one performance part.

The MFX has to listen on a certain channel for control messages that are targeted to it (as opposed to control messages that are targeted to a particular part). The MFX is controlled on only one channel, but it affects many parts, and those parts are incidentally mapped to other MIDI channels.

In the same way, there is a channel that the Fantom listens in order to switch performances in response to a program change message (the performance control channel). The performance that is called up affects many parts / channels.
